Navigation Clinic (2 Days)

WHO: This clinic is intended for sea kayakers interested in undertaking journeys where they may find themselves dealing with unfamiliar regions, fog, tidal currents, and open crossings, or who simply want a better toolkit for trip planning and safety. The class will be taught by Jennifer Yearley, with the objective of building practical skills that can be deployed on the water to get from here to there with confidence.

*Prerequisite: Open water skills sufficient to paddle comfortably in current, chop, and wind on San Francisco Bay.

WHAT: Navigation is the art of getting from place to place, using techniques that allow you to determine a course, where you are along that course, and distance traveled. This can be done next to shore or in open water with no land in site; it can be done with clear visibility or in conditions where visibility is almost zero. It comprises an ancient set of skills. In the class, we will cover chart reading, journey timing, using a compass, plotting a course, correcting for current effects, fixing position, dead reckoning, and piloting skills. Exercises will be performed in the classroom on day 1, then skills applied out on the water on day 2.

WHERE: The first day of this course will consist of classroom and land-based exercises and will take place at 387 17th St, Oakland, CA 94612. The second day will consist of applied on-water exercises building off of work conducted the previous day. We will launch from Horseshoe Cove and conduct exercises both in San Francisco Bay, and out the Gate.
