Open Coast Skills (Half Moon Bay)
WHO: This class will be taught by Bill Vonnegut and is intended for sea kayakers who have experience paddling on protected water such as San Francisco Bay and are seeking to expand their horizons to the open coast. You will have had some limited surf zone experience and have solid bracing skills. A combat roll is NOT required.
Prerequisite: L4: Intro to Surf Zone or equivalent training and experience.
WHAT: This is the 3rd in our Progression of Classes designed to prepare you for paddling on the open coast in Level 4 conditions. During this coastal trip, we will help you assess and develop your personal skills and help grow your knowledge and experience so that you feel ready to explore the open coast with other paddlers. We will work on learning, interpreting marine forecasts, planning a trip with use of a chart, finding suitable places to land, strategy for maneuvering around reefs. We will also discuss risk assessment and challenge you to think about what to do if things do not go according to plan.
WHERE: We will meet in Half Moon Bay. The goal for this trip is to head to Flat Rock (pending conditions) Once conditions for this trip can be determined the week of the event we will decide the exact launch location.
WHEN: Meet at 8:30am. Be changed and ready by 9.00am. We will be off the water by 3.00pm and wrapped up by 3.30pm.
WHY: This course is intended to build your skills and confidence to help prepare you for open coast paddling. Skills covered in this class will also provide background for the next course in the series, L4: Intro to Rock Gardening.
