Profile:
I grew up in Marin County, CA. I started kayaking at the age of 5. At the age of seven I learned how to roll a kayak, performing synchronized rolling demonstrations with my twin brother Galen. In 2002 I participated in the Santa Cruz Kayak Surf Festival. I was chosen to represent the USA at the 2003 World Championships in Ireland as a junior. The USA team took fourth place, and I also took fourth in the junior IC class.
Kayaking became my life. A month after I received my driver’s license, at the age of 16, my brother and I took a two-week road trip to BC, Canada. We spent a week running class IV creeks in and around Whistler before heading to the Sunshine Coast to play on the legendary Skookumchuck tidal rapid.
In 2004 I travelled to New Zealand to paddle for seven weeks with Huge Experiences, a white water kayak school for high school students wanting to improve their kayaking skills while receiving a high school education. During this time I paddled on some of the best rivers New Zealand had to offer. Following New Zealand, the school headed to the East Coast of the US to find some more rivers.
In 2005 I was once again selected for the US West Surf Kayak Team, for the World Championships in Costa Rica. Repeating my 2003 performance, I took fourth place in the junior IC class. I helped the US West Team become World Champions.
A year later, after graduating from high school I enrolled in the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS). I travelled to Patagonia, Chile, which is one of their most intense semesters. The weather can change within ten minutes from sunny blue skies to heavy snow and white out conditions. We did a 28-day sea kayak expedition before heading to the snow covered ridges for a further 26 long and wet days! Throughout the trip I learned much about myself and the leadership skills required to lead a group into the unknown.
During the winter of 2006/7 I led cross-country ski trips for people with disabilities and underprivileged youth. I worked for Environmental Travelling Companions (ETC); a non-profit organization devoted to helping people with special needs experience white water rafting, sea kayaking and cross-country skiing.
I currently work for my father and his sea kayaking company; Sea Trek Ocean Kayaking Center. I am the manager of our new retail store, as well as Beach Manager supervising the rental operation. I regularly lead guided trips and provide instruction to novice and more experienced paddlers as well as operating the safety boat when required.
In my 19 years I have had more experience than many have in a lifetime and have developed an understanding and respect for the ocean and rivers. I enjoy sharing my knowledge and experience with those who are as eager as I am to further develop their skills or who are venturing onto the water for the first time.
