L5 Advanced Open Coast Trip – Devil’s Slide

L5 Devil’s Slide (San Mateo Coast)
Join Level 5 instructors Kelly Henry and David Santaniello for one of the most spectacular open coast kayaking trips on the West Coast! We will launch from Rockaway Beach in Pacifica and paddle south along the dramatic and often challenging coastline of San Mateo County past Pedro Point Headlands, San Pedro Rock, Devil’s Slide, Gray Whale Cove, Point Montara Lighthouse and Pillar Point, finishing at Pillar Point Harbor, Half Moon Bay.
This is a 12 mile open coast paddle and we can expect Level 5 conditions.
This is a great opportunity to test out your skills and equipment in a challenging setting with our expert staff. We will discuss and plan for safety as a team to broaden your open coast sea kayaking horizons. Don’t miss an amazing paddling adventure!
Duration of the Class: 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM
Time on the Water: Approximately 5 hours
Location: Rockaway Beach, Pacifica to Pillar Point Harbor, Half Moon Bay
We will either meet at Rockaway Beach or Pillar Point Harbor to set up a shuttle. The exact location will be determined 1 week prior to the trip and will be based on kayak transportation logistics.
Prerequisites: L5 Advanced Rock Garden Skills & Safety (or equivalent training). A solid roll and recent paddling experience STRONGLY recommended.

Goal: Explore the magnificent San Mateo coastline including Pedro Point Headlands, San Pedro Rock, Devil’s Point and Pillar Point.
Note: This is a 12 mile open coast paddle and we can expect Level 5 conditions. Good physical condition is required to ensure an enjoyable day on the water. If you are not sure about your abilities to handle such an activity, please call Kelly at (401) 474-0347. If seasickness is a potential issue for you, then measures should be taken to deal with it; we can give advice in advance about sea sickness medications.
This trip for advanced paddlers who have recent experience and are very comfortable in rock gardens and the surf zone. It is particularly appropriate for club paddlers, leaders and instructors who lead groups on the open coast.
If conditions are inappropriate (high surf, winds, etc) the class WILL BE CANCELLED and you can reschedule. Please be prepared for this last-minute possibility; as we can’t always know for sure what the sea conditions will be until the morning of the class.
