May 5 @ 9:00 am - 4:00 pm$129
This class, taught by Jennifer Yearley, is intended for sea kayakers who have experience paddling on protected open water such as San Francisco Bay and are seeking to expand their horizons to the open coast or to refine their skills in this environment. You will have had some surf zone experience and have solid bracing skills. A combat roll is not required.
Prerequisite: L4: Intro to Surf Zone or equivalent training and experience.
WHAT: This is the 3rd in our Progression of Classes designed to prepare you for paddling on the open coast in Level 4 conditions. During a coastal journey of up to eight miles, we will help you develop your personal skills and grow your knowledge and experience for paddling the open coast. We will work on learning, refinement, and application of strokes relevant to maneuvering in the open coast environment, water reading, and tactical use of environmental features in rock gardens. We will also discuss risk assessment and challenge you to think about what to do if things do not go to plan.
WHERE: We will meet at and launch from Horseshoe Cove, will head out under the Golden Gate Bridge, and will work our way along the Marin Headlands using the conditions of the day to work on skills all the way. If conditions allow, we will paddle out to Point Bonita and explore this dynamic exposed area where the the Golden Gate opens to the Pacific Ocean.
WHEN: Meet at 9.00am and be ready to paddle by 9.30am. We will be off the water by 4.00pm.
WHY: This course is intended to build your skills and confidence to help prepare you for open coast paddling. Skills covered in this class will also provide background for the next course in the series, L4: Intro to Rock Gardening.
